These are seven of the twelve children born of Ignatius and Katie (nee Ethen) Zeltinger. Back Row: Lena, Mathias (aka Math, Matt), Louise, Frank; Front Row: John, Clara, Ann. From a family history: Great grandfather Ignatius (1871-1952) was a school teacher in Spring Hill, MN. Grandfather Matt was born there as were two other siblings. In June, 1900 Ignatius, his brother, John Zeltinger, and his brother-in-law, Henry Ethen, took a train to Kenmare, ND where they disembarked and walked to land where they staked their claims (in Roosevelt Township south of where Tolley, ND was later built). After filing their claims, they returned to MN, but returned to their land later that summer to build their claim shacks (required to be built when homesteading). The three men dug a well, made hay for the horses, and built several sod barns while waiting for their parents, wives and children to arrive. In November, 1900 the group arrived bringing with them a carload of supplies, several horses, chickens, a cow, and lumber for the house on Ignatius' claim, where all of them stayed for the first winter. (While building this house, the group stayed at the Joseph Weber home not far away. The Webers were from St. Cloud, MN and had arrived earlier that year.) During the first year, supplies were gotten from Kenmare, ND which was about 14 miles away. The nearest Doctor was also in Kenmare. Wheat was taken to be ground at McKinney, ND, about 6 miles away. The original Ignatius Zeltinger house (four rooms and a loft) housed the family until 1916. At that time, it was replaced by a house that still stands. This new house was the first farm house in the area to have indoor plumbing and hot water heating. The attached photo is taken in front of the first house. It was built in 1900-1. Matt appears to be 13 years of age, or so. He was born in 1897, so this photo, I estimate, was taken in 1910. Notice the enameled drinking cup hanging on the outdoor water pump. The pump handle sticks out a little above Frank's left shoulder. There is a chair on the back porch along with some hanging yard tools. Curtains in the window. House is unpainted. Matt would live to be 65, dying in 1962 in Pierre, SD. | Original Image |
